The parents of a surfer from Cornwall who died in a terrorist bombing in Bali are planning to visit the island where their son died.

Surf enthusiast Marc Gajardo, 30, from Carnon Downs, near Truro, was among 200 people killed at a nightclub in October 2002.

He died after a car bomb exploded outside the club in the town of Kuta.

Now his parents, Ray and Carol Gajardo, say they are to fulfil a promise they made to their son just days before he died to visit the Indonesian island.

Marc touched their lives in some way, even if they'd only known him for a couple of week

Marc Gajardo's 22-year-old girlfriend, Hanabeth Luke, escaped injury in the blast.

The couple had been on their way to Australia where they had been planning to make a permanent home.

In the months after the bombing, there have been memorial services held for Mr Gajardo and a surf contest which raised money for victims of the attack.

About 2,000 was raised by the event for the Balinese Rotary Association to care for victims and their families and plans to build a memorial hospital.

Now, six months after the bombing, Ray Gajardo, has said he is determined to visit the island his son loved.

"He described the place as 'the most beautiful in the world'."

Carol Gajardo says in the last few months she has learnt wonderful things about her son.

She said: "Many people have said that Marc touched their lives in some way, even if they'd only known him literally for a couple of weeks.

"It was another side of Marc that we didn't know existed."
