Police headcams to be rolled out

Police officers in the south of Cambridgeshire will be wearing headcams in a bid to cut anti-social behaviour and domestic violence.

The headcams will be used by officers in Cambridge, Histon, Sawston and Ely every Friday and Saturday night.

The audio and visual evidence captured will then be used in court in an attempt to secure more convictions.

Officers in Peterborough, Fenland and Huntingdonshire already regularly use headcams.

Insp Ian Lyons said: "This was trialled on the (southern) division quite some time ago.

"We are now in a position where training has been rolled out to reactive officers, neighbourhood officers, PCSOs and soon to be trained special constables.

"It is hoped that as well as gaining good quality evidence, it will help keep the public and officers safe if offenders know they could be captured on film.

"The cameras will also form part of our additional night time economy patrols which always take place in the lead up to the Christmas festivities."
