New bishop replacement is named

Archdeacon Donald Allister
Archdeacon Donald said he was "overwhelmed" by the new job

The next Bishop of Peterborough has been announced.

The Venerable Donald Allister, who is currently Archdeacon of Chester, will be consecrated as a bishop and move to Peterborough by early spring.

He is replacing Rt Revd Ian Cundy who died, aged 64, in May from cancer. Bishop Cundy had planned to retire from the position in July.

Archdeacon Donald, 57, is married to Janice, who is a doctor, and they have three adult children.

He said: "I am overwhelmed by this new job but believe it is the Church's call and God's call to me.

"I'm looking forward to leading the Diocese of Peterborough and getting to know the people, churches and communities there."

Archdeacon Donald said his first priority will be to listen to the clergy and lay leaders of the diocese.
