UKIP makes council breakthrough

The UK Independence Party (UKIP) has won its first seat on Cambridgeshire County Council.

The Ramsey by-election had been due to take place on 6 June, but was postponed when Liberal Democrat candidate Ray Powell died.

The vote was re-scheduled while a new Lib Dem candidate was found.

The count put Peter Reeve for UKIP first with 865 votes. The Conservatives came second with 682. The Lib Dems polled 308 votes.

A county council spokesman said the turnout was 30.2%

The council has 69 councillors, with Conservatives holding 42 seats, Lib Dems 23, Labour 2 and the Green Party and UKIP each holding 1.
