Clergy gather for bishop funeral

The Archbishop of Canterbury is to join representatives of other Christian denominations for the funeral of the Bishop of Peterborough.

Rowan Williams and the Dean of Peterborough, the Very Rev Charles Taylor, will lead the service for the the Rt Rev Ian Cundy.

Bishop Cundy, 64, died suddenly on 7 May. He had been suffering from cancer and had announced his retirement.

The funeral will be held at Peterborough Cathedral.

About 40 Church of England bishops will attend the funeral, as well as the Roman Catholic bishop of East Anglia, the Rt Rev Michael Evans.

Bishop Cundy had undergone chemotherapy but his cancer had recently spread.

He collapsed while on his way from Cambridgeshire to a family gathering in the West Country.

Bishop Cundy wrote his own funeral service before the final stage of his illness, including an invitation to mourners in the introduction to contemplate the "mystery" of God.
