Brigade marks 125th anniversary

A volunteer fire brigade is marking its 125th anniversary with a freedom parade in Cambridgeshire.

Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1884 and was given the Freemen of the City honour in 1984.

There will be a celebration service in Peterborough Cathedral on Sunday after the procession from the town hall.

The brigade is different to the rest of the country's retained fire stations because its volunteers do not get paid, even when they get called out.

It was formed by a group of businessmen after they believed the efforts of the Corporation Brigade, as it was then, had been ineffective during a serious fire at Peterborough's infirmary.
