Woolworths stores finally close

The first Woolworths shops in Cambridgeshire are preparing to shut down for good as the second wave of the chain's closures takes place.

Shops in Ely and St Ives will close later, followed by the Huntingdon and St Neots branches in the new year.

More than 200 stores across the UK closed their doors last weekend, signalling the chain's final days on the High Street after 99 years.

It is estimated 27,000 staff will lose their jobs across the UK.

Administrators were called in last month by the high street chain, which has debts of £385m.

Interest has been expressed in the Woolworths brand name and offers have been made on more than 300 of their stores.

Woolworths is selling off its stock and has cut prices in its remaining stores.
