Woolworths prepares to shut down

Four Woolworths shops in Cambridgeshire are preparing to shut down for good as the first wave of the chain's closures takes place.

On Saturday evening 200 branches across the UK are closing their doors for the last time.

Stores in Cambridgeshire are not involved in the first closures, but branches in Ely and St Ives will shut during the second round on Tuesday.

The Huntingdon and St Neots branches will shut in the new year.

It is estimated 27,000 staff will lose their jobs across the UK.

Administrators were called in last month by the high street chain, which has debts of £385m.

Interest has been expressed in the Woolworths brand name and offers have been made on more than 300 of their stores.

Woolworths is selling off its stock and has cut prices in its remaining stores.
