Murder inquiry after attack death

A murder inquiry is under way in Cambridgeshire after an assault which led to the death of a man.

Piotr Bielicki had been to a barbeque on the embankment in Peterborough on Saturday before leaving on his own.

He was found unconscious at about 2200 BST on the river embankment by friends who took him to hospital by car.

Mr Bielicki was declared dead during the early hours of Sunday morning after surgery. A post-mortem examination attributed his death to an assault.

Home Office pathologist Nat Carey said that it was not believed any weapon was used in the attack.

Detectives are working to establish what happened in the time between Mr Bielicki leaving the party at about 2130 BST and being found unconscious by his friends.

They say they can find no reason why anyone would want to harm him.

Officers want to talk to anyone who was in the area on Saturday between 1900 BST and 2100 BST.
