Local people are being consulted over plans for Jesus Green, Cambridge

A scheme to revamp a major park in Cambridge with a new riverside walk, tree avenue, cafe and public square, has been unveiled.

Cambridge City Council is consulting local people on the plans for Jesus Green, which is near Jesus College.

The council is putting in an application to the Heritage Lottery Parks for Peoples fund on 30 September to help support the project.

The decision on the funding is likely to be made early in 2009.

The scheme could also include new plantings, a skateboarding facility, an area for band concerts and theatre performances, and a new play area.

The council is also hoping to develop wildflower and biodiversity areas by increasing the amount of long grass.

It would also provide an educational and wildlife resource for local schools or groups.
