A 10,000-seat community stadium is being considered for Cambridge.
The Cambridgeshire Horizons group, set up by local authorities, has published a report into the feasibility of a sports stadium in the city.
The study said such a stadium could provide a venue for local residents, to meet expected population growth, as well as an arena for sports clubs.
The group said it would find a site for the Cambridge Community Stadium before going through the planning process.
The report has identified three potential sites:
- Milton Road - Close to the Park & Ride site with transport access from the A10 and A14
- Cambridge East - Part of the current airport site under the master plan for Cambridge East
- Cowley Road - An area earmarked for development, although it could only provide limited facilities alongside the stadium
The study also said Cambridge United Football Club could justify the use of a 10,000-seat stadium and would therefore be an ideal lead partner for the project.
"The overarching aim of the study was to identify potential main partners for the community stadium, and who would use it," said John Onslow of Cambridgeshire Horizons.
"A growing community needs bigger and better sports facilities, which is why we want to create an overall vision for the project before identifying what the next steps should be towards providing it."
