Bluetooth used for police advice

Enabling Bluetooth on a mobile
Phones with Bluetooth enabled can receive messages

Latest mobile phone technology is being used in a crime-prevention campaign at a Cambridgeshire football match.

Spectators at the Peterborough United game with Premiership side Liverpool who have a Bluetooth facility enabled will get a message from the police.

The short message, which is received free of charge, gives a welcome, a warning about opportunist thieves and road safety advice.

Bluetooth will receive messages sent within a radius of about 100m (330ft).

The message from Cambridgeshire Police reads: "Welcome to Peterborough United versus Liverpool.

"We hope that you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home. Remember to keep your valuables with you and out of sight.

"Remember to remove your sat navs from your vehicles. Don't advertise your property to thieves."

Pure information

Bluetooth messages are purely for information and will not require a response.

The technology is also used to send crime prevention and safety messages to young people on weekend nights out in the city centre.

Chief Superintendent Paul Phillipson said: "Bluetooth messaging shows we are using the latest technology in our ongoing campaign to make Peterborough a safer place in which to live, work or visit.

"It will continue to be used at football matches and other locations where there are large crowds.

"It is also used to update people on the issues around them, whether they involve safety or crime prevention."
