A mother whose rat-loving son was struggling to find friends with a similar hobby has set up her own club in Cambridgeshire.

Iona Deards wanted a regular place where her son Lewis, 10, could attend but failed to find one.

Lewis, who has autism, currently has three rats and his mother said they have become great companions and make good pets for children.

The first Rat Club meeting is 1 June at Southoe and Buckden Scout Hut, Buckden.

Meetings will be held between 1130 and 1630 BST on the first Sunday of every month.

Ms Deards said one aim of the club was to raise awareness of the rat as a pet and companion.

There will also health checks for all rats, and experts, including breeders and rescue shelter staff, will be invited as special guests.

Ms Deards said: "It took Lewis two years to persuade us to get him a rat and then 18 months ago we gave in.

"We joined lots of forums and used to travel down to a rat club in Enfield because that was the closest one to us.

"For Lewis, it is something he can get involved in.

"It has taken over his life and the rats are great companions.

"He is allowed to take his rats into school if he has had a good day."
