Drivers in Cambridge are facing daily delays as 10 months of roadworks begin.
There are restrictions from Monday near the railway bridge on the city's Hills Road while an underpass for the Guided Busway is built through an embankment.
The 25km guideway mainly along a former St Ives to Cambridge railway line will link Huntingdon and Cambridge and also cater for cyclists and pedestrians.
Head of the busway project Bob Menzies said he believed the disruption was better than shutting the road.
He said: "We're introducing new bus lanes to reduce delays for buses and park and ride services on the bridge.
"This will enable buses to bypass queues of cars and get on and off the bridge quickly.
"We're also going to temporarily prohibit some turns at junctions on either side of the bridge, which could hold up vehicles wanting to go straight over the bridge."
