A newly refurbished £5m MRI unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge has now opened.
Three new machines have been added to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy unit and are housed in a separate building.
The machines will let staff carry out a wider range of clinical tests and it is also hoped that waiting times for MRI scans will be reduced.
The radiology department now has five scanners available for patients.
Adrian Dixon, professor of radiology at Cambridge University, said: "It's taken us six months and £5m to get here.
"But we've created something that is truly the envy of hospitals and research institutions all over the country."
