More than 200 drivers and passengers have been fined in one week in a police crackdown on people not wearing seatbelts in Cambridgeshire.
The campaign to cut road deaths was part of a Europe-wide initiative.
Police fined 218 people on this occasion and Pc Tony Barrios said: "A seatbelt can mean the difference between life and death."
In 2006, fixed penalty notices were handed out after 5,814 adults and 233 children were caught in the county.
Pc Barrios said: "If we are to make the roads safer it is vital that everyone buckles up, seatbelts save lives and reduce injuries," he said.
"Putting on your seatbelt should be part of your routine before even starting your vehicle and drivers should be responsible for ensuring all passengers wear seatbelts."
