£750m waste plans gets go ahead
Landfill site
Councils will be fined for going over strict landfill limits
Council chiefs have backed a £750m contract which involves thousands of tonnes of waste being composted or recycled instead of going to landfill.

Cambridgeshire County Council agreed to sign a 28-year contract with local company Donarbon Limited.

The project will see the building of recycling facilities at Waterbeach.

The mechanical biological treatment plant would sort black bag rubbish, remove material for recycling and produce a compost-like material.

The company also proposes to build a visitor centre at the site. Facilities for the composting of kerbside-collected kitchen and garden waste will also be provided under the new contract.

The government is set to fine authorities £150 for every tonne they go over the strict landfill limits.
