Pope Benedict XVI has made a personal donation to help keep a Catholic chaplain at Cambridge University.
The Pope makes a personal contribution to an appeal
The Pope has given 3,000 euros (nearly £2,000) to the Fisher House appeal for money to maintain the post held by Catholic priest Fr Alban McCoy.
He visited Cambridge in 1989 to deliver a lecture and stayed at the chaplaincy.
Fr McCoy said: "It is both encouraging and humbling to know that the Pope has shown such a personal interest in what happens at Fisher House."
In total £2m is needed to ensure the chaplaincy's future and £850,000 has been raised so far.
