Blue Plaque to Garden's founder
Botanic garden
The garden attracts more than 130,000 visitors every year
A Blue Plaque commemorating the founder of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden (CUBG) is to be unveiled.

Professor John Stevens Henslow, who opened the Botanic Garden in 1846, was a Professor of Botany and mentor to the young Charles Darwin.

A spokesman for CUBG said: "Henslow transmitted his insights and enthusiasm for botany to his students."

Prof Henslow developed a collection of 8,000 plants. The Garden attracts more than 130,000 visitors every year.

As well as encouraging the young Charles Darwin's interest in nature, Prof Henslow is credited with arranged for him to become a naturalist on the HMS Beagle.
