Plan for the Mill near Cambridge Railway Station
The centre is planned for the Mill near Cambridge Railway Station
Local people are being asked their views on plans for a major overhaul of archives in Cambridge.

A new Historical Resource and Cultural Centre (HRCC), is planned by Ashwell Property Group for their city centre site near Station Road, Cambridge.

Cambs County Council and Ashwell are looking at how best they can provide the archives, archaeology and local studies collections for residents.

The public consultation will run until 7 January, 2006.

Questionnaires are available from County Record offices in Cambridge and Huntingdon, as well as libraries and museums across the county

Landmark building

The centre is part of a major redevelopment scheme which is set to include a new shopping and housing complex around Cambridge railway station.

The plan is to site the centre on a former mill situated next to the station which is perhaps best known locally as Spillers Mill.

The large mill building was constructed in 1894 for the Foster family and was designed by Calder and Kitchen of Hull.

It is considered an important landmark building, as it is a rare industrial building in Cambridge.

The new centre aims to provide high quality storage for the county's unique archive collections, with state-of-the-art protection and preservation facilities.

In addition, the world famous Cambridgeshire Collection - currently housed within city's central library - is also expected to move into the same building.

Office accommodation for staff who work in the archives, arts, museums and archaeology services of the County Council will also be provided.

Working in partnership with other museums and galleries, libraries and schools across Cambridgeshire, the Centre aims to develop outreach services for areas of social need and rural deprivation.
