Traders opposed to plans to introduce car parking charges in Ely have held a protest march through the city centre.
East Cambs District Council says the charges are needed to cope with the number of cars coming into the city.
But traders are worried that if parking charges are introduced customers will stay away.
The council proposes to charge people 50p per hour or £5 a day in car parks in the centre and 40p per hour or £2.50 per day in other car parks.
More than 6,000 people have already signed a petition against plans to introduce parking charges.
The campaign against charging has been organised by independent retailers calling themselves Ely Traders.
They argue that a large number of city shops are independent and that if shoppers have to pay to park it will have a detrimental effect on business.
