A new type of bread said to be healthier than the average loaf is now being produced in Cambridgeshire.
Selenium-enriched bread is now being produced in local fields
The bread is made from wheat grown in soil enriched with selenium, which is believed to be effective in maintaining a strong immune system.
Traces of the element have been placed in fields near Papworth Everard, Cambs.
Mark Law, of research company Nutrilaw, said: "Selenium has been proven to reduce cancers and heart disease, and it improves immunity."
The element is also believed to help regulate blood pressure and improve fertility.
"We feel selenium is the one of the most important trace elements of all," Mr Law said.
"You cannot get it from normal food. It has been depleted out of UK and European soils over the last fifty years."
The loaf is the result of an eight-year research project by the Cambridge company, Nutrilaw, who have been working with farmers in the Papworth area to place selenium in the soil.
Nutrilaw's fertiliser manufacturing base is at March in Cambridgeshire and its research and development centre is based at Narborough in Norfolk.
The bread will be available in Waitrose supermarkets.
