Thousands sign parking petition
More than 6000 people have signed a petition against plans to introduce parking charges in a Cambs city.

East Cambs District Council says the charges are needed to cope with the rising number of cars coming into Ely.

The campaign against charging has been organised by independent retailers calling themselves Ely Traders.

They argue that a large number of city shops are independent and that if shoppers have to pay to park it will have a detrimental effect on business.

The council proposes to charge people 50p per hour or 5 a day in car parks in the centre of the city and 40p per hour or 2.50 per day in other car parks.

The campaign group said it was pleased with the response to its campaign and it will continue to gather signatures for the petition
