A police constable faces jail after being convicted of abducting and indecently assaulting a teenager he contacted via an internet chatroom.

James Beeton, 35, who works for Cambs Police in Peterborough, was convicted on Wednesday at Luton Crown Court.

Beeton had denied the offences, which the court heard had taken place in Nottingham in April 2003.

Judge Ronald Moss adjourned sentencing until February, but told Beeton that a jail sentence was inevitable.

He released the defendant on conditional bail pending sentence.

The prosecution alleged that Beeton, who lives at Fletton, Peterborough, abducted and indecently assaulted the girl after meeting her near her home in a village north of Nottingham in June 2003.

He seduced her with text messages after first contacting her in an internet chatroom.

Beeton had claimed he had chatted with a woman on the internet whom he believed was 18 years old.

The officer, who was based at Thorpe Wood station, was arrested in October 2003.
