'Few' blamed for school absences
Head teacher Val Spriggs is fighting truancy
A primary school which has the highest number of unauthorised absences in Cambridgeshire says shopping trips and birthday outings are to blame.

Cavalry Primary in March insists just five or six families are to blame for repeatedly taking their children out of school without a good enough reason.

The absences give the school a poor rating for truancy.

But head teacher Val Spriggs said its performance would improve after the problems were highlighted.

"The cause is a few families for whom there have been problems," she said. "They skew the statistics quite badly.

"In a year we will be in line with other schools in the county. It's just the way the statistics are recorded and it's really unfair."
