Driver dies after river plunge
The car is retrieved from the River Nene
The driver was dead on arrival at Addenbrooke's Hospital
A man has died after a white Astra van plunged into the River Nene from Northbank Road between Peterborough and Whittlesey on Wednesday morning.

Cambridgeshire Police said the man was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge after being taken from the water but was dead on arrival.

The van has now been recovered from the river and the road has been reopened after a police investigation.

Details of identity will be released when next of kin have been informed.

It is not yet known how the accident happened.

A police spokesman said they had been alerted to the upturned car by a member of the public who spotted it in the river with its lights on.

He said it had been a very foggy night and officers found the road was greasy.
