Rail depot plan set to go-ahead
Whitemoor Prison
The Prison Service has concerns over the plans
Plans for the country's biggest rail track maintenance centre are set to be approved.

Planners are calling for Cambridgeshire county councillors to back the scheme for a 108-acre site in March.

The £30m Network Rail depot would be the biggest track maintenance centre in the country, bringing jobs to the area and rejuvenating the site, the old Whitemoor Sidings.

However, there have been objections to the plans from a variety of groups including the Prison Service.

It is believed to have concerns about the impact of noise from the depot on inmates at nearby Whitemoor Prison.

Despite these objections, Cambridgeshire County Council officers are recommending the plans are backed.

The application will go before the council's development control committee on Monday evening.
