Rising bollard campaign defeated
Rising bollards
The controversial rising bollards will be the city's eighth set
Rising bollards are to be put in on a street in Cambridge despite widespread opposition.

Councillors approved the plans for Silver Street on Monday night.

People living in the area around Silver Street, which links the city centre to routes leading out of town, campaigned against the rising bollards.

Around 340 people in Newnham signed a locally-organised petition.

They said the extra signs that would be put in place would spoil the historic area.

The bollards will be the eighth set controlling traffic on city streets.

They are automatically lowered by an electronic tag given to taxis and buses.

Councillors also approved plans for a coach drop-off point in the picuresque section of Queens Road known as the Backs.

Construction is likely to start in the summer.
