The Park Centre deals with children who struggle at mainstream schools

An investigation has started after a 16-year-old boy died at a Bristol unit for youngsters who have problems at mainstream schools.

The boy - named only as Jack - apparently suffered convulsions and fell at The Park Centre in Knowle West.

The unit is run by Bristol City Council's education department.

Paramedics were called at 1243 GMT on Wednesday, but Jack suffered a cardiac arrest and was later declared dead at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

When paramedics first arrived, Jack was suffering from head injuries but was "up and talking," said a Great Western Ambulance Service spokesman.

Council strategic director for children, Annie Hudson, said: "This is a tragic situation and our thoughts are with Jack's family and friends.

"A full investigation into the circumstances around his death is under way."

The boy's parents have been informed, and the death referred to the Health and Safety Executive.
