Man hurt in one-tonne block fall

Accident scene
The man suffered a serious head injury despite wearing a hard hat

A builder working on a shop refurbishment in Bristol suffered a fractured skull when he was hit on the head by a falling concrete panel.

The 21-year-old's colleagues managed to drag him to safety from the gantry where he was working after the panel - believed to weigh one tonne - fell.

A Great Western Ambulance spokesman said the man was removing a shop fascia when the accident happened.

He said he suffered "a serious head injury" despite wearing a hard hat.

"He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment," he added.
