Giant crab sneaks into aquarium

Santa Claws
Santa Claws arrived unexpectedly in a delivery lorry

An aquarium in Bristol has a surprise new attraction - an edible crab which stowed away in a delivery lorry.

The large crustacean, named Santa Claws, arrived with a delivery of seawater to Blue Reef Aquarium, due to open on the harbourside in November.

The crab measures more than 20cm (7.9in) across the shell and has fist-sized claws.

Blue Reef spokeswoman Zahra d'Aronville said: "He will definitely now have his place in the aquarium's history."

The edible crab is the largest crab species found around the British Isles and can reach up to 30cm (11.8in) in size.

Ms d'Aronville added: "The driver of the tanker who gave him to us did it with the proviso that we had to keep the name that he'd come up with for him.

"So Santa Claws has come extremely early to Bristol this year."
