Carnival fund-raising discussed

Sponsorship of the carnival was down this year because of the recession

Organisers of the St Pauls Carnival in Bristol say it will now be Monday afternoon before they know how much money has been raised.

Earlier in the week organisers revealed a £10,000 gap in the festival's finance and said cash would be collected on the day in buckets to meet the shortfall.

Artistic director Pax Nindi said Saturday's festival had gone really well with no problems reported.

Tens of thousands packed the streets to see the carnival procession.

The St Pauls carnival, which is known for its flamboyant costumes and entertainment, celebrates African Caribbean arts and culture. It is run by a non profit-making organisation.

An emergency meeting to discuss the £10,000 shortfall in funding is due to take place on Thursday.

An announcement would be made then, a spokesman for the festival said.
