Man arrested over woman's murder

Police cordoned off the road on Wednesday morning

A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of an elderly woman was discovered at a property near Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police were called to a disturbance on Seymour Road in the Staple Hill area, South Gloucestershire, at about 0815 BST.

There they found the body of a 78-year-old woman.

Police later arrested a man and have closed the street while investigations continue.

Residents said police and ambulance crews had arrived in the morning, followed by a police helicopter.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a domestic incident at 8.15am this morning.

''The body of a 78-year-old woman was found dead at the property. She appeared to have suffered a violent assault.

''A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and our inquiries are continuing.''
