A Polish woman with terminal cancer whose flight home was paid for by people in the West is being reunited with her 11-year-old son.

Theresa Wasik, 34, had been working in Wiltshire and received treatment for cervical cancer at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Polish journalist Kacper Cecota said Ms Wasik's son Kuba was "very upset, very saddened by his mother's illness".

His mother is now in a hospice near her home village.

Public donations

Mr Cecota said: "He is not speaking to anyone except his grandmother. It's not surprising, it must be a terrible blow for such a young boy as he's got to face the painful truth that his mother is passing away."

The plane carrying Ms Wasik and a medical team landed in Poland on Thursday evening.

"Everybody here was very unsure whether her last wish could be fulfilled," said Mr Cecota.

"When she arrived there was happiness that Theresa was back home and there was despair because of her condition."

About £9,000 was raised by public donations to ensure Ms Wasik would be surrounded by family and friends when she died.

"We were surprised that the whole community not just the Poles contributed. It's one of the very few spirit-lifting elements of this deeply sad story," said Mr Cecota.

People in Poland have followed Ms Wasik's story closely.

"The last two days it has been the lead story on both the local and regional media and people called my TV station asking if they can help," he said.
