Suspension bridge closed by fault

Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge has been closed after a crack was found in one of its metal hanging rods.

Engineering experts are due to assess the structure and the bridge is expected to remain shut overnight, BBC correspondent John Kay said.

A spokesman at the Bridgemaster's office said it was a very rare event which had not happened for many years.

But staff are said to be confident that the cracked rod can be fixed in time for it to reopen on Sunday.
