New off-road path for cycle city

Work has started on a new off-road cycle path in South Gloucestershire.

Funded by the Cycling City project, the new route will cover about four miles between Yate and Mangotsfield via Westerleigh.

Cyclists will then be able to continue, from Mangotsfield, along the railway path to Bristol or Bath.

Cycling charity Sustrans is looking at the practicalities and are talking to landowners. The scheme is one of 16 routes in the Cycling City project.

Councillor Brian Allinson, of South Gloucestershire Council, said: "This route would provide a safe and vital cycle link between Yate, the surrounding villages and popular destinations in Bristol and South Gloucestershire and is a top priority for the area."

South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council were awarded a total of £22.8m in government funding to transform the cycling infrastructure and encourage more people to use bicycles.
