New factory for extra-wide plane

The aircraft will be made in three versions

Airbus has begun work building a new £130m factory in Toulouse in the South of France to assemble the extra-wide bodied A350 plane.

The wings for the aircraft will be made at the company's facility in Filton, near Bristol, which has just been taken over by GKN.

Rolls-Royce is to supply the engines for the A350 which is due to enter service in 2013.

Airbus has taken 478 orders for the new plane from 29 customers.

It will be made in three versions -the A350-800, which can accommodate 270 passengers, the A350-900, which will seat 314 people and the A350-1000 in which 350 passengers can travel.
