Family's 'lucky escape' from fire

A family of six people had a "very lucky escape" after a fire started in the kitchen of their home in Bristol.

Fire crews were called to the house on Hogarth Walk in Lockleaze in the early hours of Sunday after one of the occupants woke and smelt smoke.

All six including two young children managed to escape unharmed.

An Avon Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said there were no working smoke detectors in the house. The family's dog died in the fire.

'Smoke-logged'

She said: "When firefighters arrived there was a large blaze in the kitchen and the entire house was smoke-logged.

"The family - a couple in their 60s, their daughter, her partner and their two young children - had a very lucky escape.

"This incident shows the value of having working smoke detectors which are tested regularly."

Fire investigators believe a faulty dishwasher was to blame.

The kitchen was badly damaged and the rest of the house was smoke damaged.
