Candle may have started flat fire

A man has been taken to hospital after a fire at his flat in Bristol.

It broke out in the early hours of Saturday in the second floor above Arches Fish Bar on Cheltenham Road in the Montpellier area of the city.

The blaze was brought under control and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment after inhaling smoke.

An Avon Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the man in his 30s had fallen asleep with a candle burning which was thought to have started the blaze.

"Fortunately the man was woken by his smoke alarm sounding," she said.

"When crews arrived the blaze was well developed and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire.

"The bedroom and hallway of the flat were badly damaged. "
