A woman believed to be in her 60s and from Bath died when she was hit by a lorry on one of the city's main roads.

Police closed part of the A36 Lower Bristol Road, between the junctions of Windsor Bridge Road and Victoria Bridge Road, to deal with the incident.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene just after 0800 GMT.

The road re-opened after more than five hours to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

Earlier on Friday traffic was diverted away from the scene and long tailbacks were reported on nearby roads.
