Speed camera torched in attack

A speed camera has been destroyed in an arson attack in Somerset.

Vandals put tyres around the device on the A37 Ilchester Road in Yeovil before setting them alight in the early hours of last Thursday.

The camera, which will cost around £45,000 to replace, is situated close to the Halfway House pub.

Landlord Paul Rowsell criticised the arsonists and said: "I just hope they don't have kids who are now killed by a speeding motorist."

He added: "I saw a nice big flame outside the window and went outside.

"They put tyres around the bottom and round the top and lit the bottom one.

"In the past 20 years people have been killed on this corner so that's why it was put in - since then nobody has died."
