Charity needs pregnant knitters

The charity Oxfam is calling for pregnant knitting enthusiasts to gather for a photo call in Bristol to highlight its poverty campaign.

Oxfam say that pregnant women who want to take part would help raise awareness of the lack of basic pre-natal health care in developing countries.

"Knit to Fight Poverty" involves knitting squares which will be sown together to make a giant baby blanket.

The charity plans to present the blanket to the government in September.

The campaign has already had support from knitters in Bristol who have knitted more than a hundred squares for the campaign.

Shirley Stark, of the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) in Bristol, said: "When I heard about this campaign, I wanted to do something positive and fun, at the same time as helping to raise awareness of the plight of women in poorer countries, to show them they are not alone.

"This is about showing that we care and that we want our leaders to take strong action to push for healthcare in poorer countries."
