A security guard needed hospital treatment after being punched in the ear by a man holding a needle, police have said.

The guard had been called to a shoplifting incident at Abbey Retail Park in Filton, South Gloucestershire.

He asked the offender to get out of his car and go with him back to a shop when the attack began.

The attacker was white, between 28 and 40 years of age, of medium build, about 5ft 9ins tall and had short dark hair.

The incident happened on Monday evening and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
