Main route opens after roadworks

A major route south of Bath is reopening to traffic after 12 weeks of maintenance and safety work.

The A36 at Limpley Stoke has been stabilised, had part of its carriageway rebuilt and had its footway resurfaced.

Gatehouses were installed at either end of the closure with staff managing the flow of residential and trade traffic.

Highways Agency project manager David Frampton said line painting and street sweeping would be carried out on Friday evening, completing the work.

The work had to be carried out for safety reasons, the agency said.

A sloping part of the road was beginning to fail and the safety barrier foundations were becoming unsafe.

A stone retaining wall between the canal arch and railway arch at Monkton Combe was showing signs of failure and rain water had worn away the granular material behind the wall.

The agency is to thank residents for their patience with a little local celebration.
