A man who escaped from a secure mental health unit near Bristol has been charged with raping a girl of 14.

Darren Harkin, 20, escaped from Hayes Hospital in Pilning on Saturday and was arrested in Monmouthshire on Sunday.

He appeared before Newport Magistrates on Tuesday charged with raping the girl before his arrest on Sunday.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it was asked to look at the case but has now referred it back to Avon and Somerset Police.

'Full review'

As well as two counts of alleged rape on Sunday morning, the accused faces charges of escaping from lawful custody and an additional charge of burglary.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Newport Crown Court on 14 February.

Avon and Somerset police spokesman Wayne Baker said: "We've undertaken a full review of all of the circumstances surrounding this case and we've also voluntarily referred the matter to the IPCC."

Hayes Hospital is an independent unit for adults with an autistic spectrum disorder which is owned and managed by the National Autistic Society.

The society said it was working with the police to determine exacly what had happened.
