An explosion has destroyed a phone box spreading debris 100m and smashing windows in surrounding homes.

It is believed a gas main may have been hit after fireworks were strapped to the old-style red telephone box.

No-one is thought to have been hurt in the explosion in School Road in Cadbury Heath near Bristol on Sunday evening.

"It looks like it was some kids who had strapped fireworks to a phone box and it has caused the phone box to blow up," a police spokeswoman said.

"Some of the residents' houses have had their windows smashed. We are appealing for witnesses," added the spokeswoman for the Avon and Somerset force.

Witnesses said the parts of the phone box had crashed into the front room of a nearby flat. The owner of the flat was given treatment for shock by paramedics.

Tony Hook, 20, from Cadbury Heath, had been drinking in the nearby Lamb Inn.

He said: "I was outside, just finishing my cigarette, when I heard the huge bang - it was deafening.

"I rushed back in the pub assuming a bomb had gone off, but eventually, when we looked outside, we saw the remains of the telephone box.

"There had been a lot of panic in the area. We were all evacuated as soon as police arrived".
