More than 100 balloons took to the skies in two mass ascents over Bristol on the second day of the 29th International Balloon Fiesta.
Large crowds gathered at Ashton Court Estate to watch the early morning and early evening take-offs.
Flight director Clive Bailey said: "It was the most perfect weather you could ever wish for."
Thursday evening saw the first of two "nightglows" where tethered balloons light their burners in time to music.
A second nightglow was due on Saturday evening.
Special shapes
Brian Jones, a piloting legend in the world of hot air ballooning, said: "I love Bristol. I was born here. It's very special.
"It is one of the most exciting take-offs from such a small place."
The special shapes, including the Piper and the Monster, have already flown.
Friday's early ascent is the second of the 2007 event and more good ballooning weather has been forecast for the weekend ahead.
This is in sharp contrast with 2006 when there was only one mass ascent during the entire four-day festival because of poor weather.
The ascent was not a record-breaker - that was set in 2000 when 156 balloons took off together.
The city's Lord Mayor, Councillor Royston Griffey JP and the High Sheriff of Bristol Richard Lee, watched the balloons leave the arena.
