Anger at new homes plan in city

More than 200 people in Bristol have signed a petition against plans to develop land near a popular allotment site in the city.

An area of derelict and overgrown land near the plot off Myrtle Drive in Shirehampton is being earmarked for more than 50 new houses.

But those who have signed the petition said the growing demand for allotments proves there is a need for more plots.

The city council said there was a shortage of social housing in Bristol.

'Surplus to requirements'

In a statement, a spokesperson said: "We need to do everything we can to deliver housing targets set by government and we are currently proceeding with the sale of this site for much needed new homes.

"This is a site that has not been used as allotments for many years and has become surplus to requirements.

"However, no development will proceed without approval from the planning committee and all issues and concerns raised by residents will be taken into account by councillors before any decision is reached."

A planning application is expected in autumn.
