22m complex may close two pools
Two swimming pools in south Bristol are set to close after the city council announced plans to build a new 22m sports and leisure complex.

The centre at Hengrove Park will mean Jubilee and Bishopsworth pools would both close as part of the council's overhaul of its swimming strategy.

If the scheme is approved, it will feature a 50m swimming pool, a four court sports hall and a whirlpool bath.

The council's cabinet will discuss the proposal at a meeting on Thursday.

Cllr Simon Cook said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for sports and swimming provision in south Bristol to be brought up to date and to meet the needs and aspirations of the vast majority of people in the area who find our current provision limited, outdated, unattractive and inaccessible."

The scheme will be funded through the government's Private Finance Initiative and Sport England, subject to final award of the grant.

If approved, work on the complex would start in 2008, with its doors opening in 2010.
