Mini mopeds and go-peds destroyed

A dozen mini mopeds and go-peds seized during a police campaign in North Somerset are to be destroyed.

The action marks the end of a campaign in Weston-super-Mare and Portishead where youths had been riding mini mopeds illegally.

After having the engine crank drilled through and the frames cut in half the wreckage will then be fed through the force's scrap metal system.

Chief Inspector Nick Walker warned parents could also face legal action.

"What parents need to remember is that a motorised scooter, whether electric or petrol-driven and whether known as a mini-moto, go-ped or buzz-board, is actually a motor vehicle for the purposes of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

"These machines can only be used on private land with the landowner's consent. They cannot be used on the highway, which includes the road, pavement, cycle paths, verges, public parks or any place to which the public have access."
